June 2008

I figured I should plug Rachel’s latest series – they are inspired by seeds collected on walks around the neighborhood and through Hoyt Arboretum. From there she took off and abstracted a variety of seeds she was familiar with as well.   The work is drawn with graphite and then painted with watercolor, and an elegant departure from her other work.  See more images on her site.   She has been working on the series for over a year and will display them for the first time next week at Tilde here in Portland.  Their is an opening reception on July 3rd from 6-9pm and the work will be up all month.  Feel free to stop in to see the paintings and check out the other wonderful wares by local artists and designers.  Tilde is at 7919 SE 13th Ave in Sellwood.

There are so many talented artists in Portland!  One of my favorites is Jenna Robertson who makes all sorts of beautiful creations out of recycled wool sweaters.  I often see her work at Noun and Flutter where I also show.   I especially enjoy her collages that are made from hand drawn and cut wool pieces that are stitched together and then stretched on canvas.  Designs usually are of birds, trees, chairs, flowers or cats and are made from 95% recycled material.  So sweet!  Check out more at her website here.

Cheers,

Rachel

Hello all,

Sorry for the lack of posts this last week – Jon and I went camping on the spur of the moment for most of the week.  We went to out to the Columbia Gorge where the Deschutes river meets the Columbia to explore the area and soak in some sun.  The area was so pretty – makes me want to do some landscape paintings!  The bottom two photos are from the Stonehenge replica built on a hill overlooking the gorge.  It was great to relax and get out of the city – we figured it will be our last real trip before our little baby is due.  Now it’s time to finish up and frame pieces for my show at Tilde going up next week.  : )

Happy Tuesday,

Rachel

Flutter is one of the loveliest shops in our fair Portland. Stuffed full of goodies, the shop is a cacophony of treasures. They also stock some of Rachel’s oil paintings, including a few of my all time favorites. Check out their site, flutterclutter, where you can now purchase many items online, but if you’re in Portland. I recommend you head down to Mississippi Avenue to check out the shop in person.

On Sunday my mom threw me a lovely baby shower with lots of family and family friends, many who I haven’t seen in years. It was exciting to get so many cute outfits, blankets and lots of other things babies need. I couldn’t believe how generous people were (especially Jon’s sister’s – Heidi and Mary – and both Jon and my Mothers)! Now that all the gifts are spread out in my living room it is feeling more and more like we have an actual baby coming.  Jon and I started our Hypno-birthing class last night with less than 9 weeks till little Adelaide’s due date. : )

One of the gifts I got was a cute little knitted ‘lovie’ bunny. I was just looking at her blog and then started looking at lots of other little handmade critters that I wanted to share. The little bunny is from Four Eyed Girl Designs (that’s the one I have!). The white woolly sheep is made by betsyb on etsy. That rascally raccoon is from cozyblue and the brown lamb is from girlsavage.

Have a great day!

Rachel encouraged me to post a little something, so I searched out a fun little Etsy theme. The talent base is virtually endless – so many beautiful stumps!

The first is a cute little print from nutandbee who has a great collection of prints, stamps, stickers, etc from the pure sweetness to the slightly satirical.

Next is a nice collection of stumps from the super seller and now Portland artist Ashley G

Check out these stump coasters at little odd forest who’s shop is full of whimsy, including more stump-related items, as well as some beautiful carved wooden objects.

Of course I had to plug Rachel’s own paintings with a shot of this stump painting. I believe the only stump painting currently available (though there is another in the works).

And finally, who could not love this stump girl print from Great Middle West?

There are tons more stumpy items available on Etsy, but little room on this page, so perhaps another time.

I became familiar with Michele’s work when I found we were showing at the same place in Ohio – Papercuts & Gluesticks. I was looking through some of the pictures they had of the space and saw her paintings and stopped everything to find out more about her because I instantly loved all her work! Later I learned she had been living in our lovely city of Portland, but had recently moved to Michigan. Maybe she’ll be back, but until then all those in Michigan are lucky to have her. She has a great blog and website in addition to an etsy shop for you to see more.

Cheers,

Rachel

I finished this piece a couple of days ago and really liked how it turned out. It was a commission piece that used a map of the Mt. Baker area and that (hopefully) captured some of the mountain’s likeness. It feels a little different than my normal style and thought I would share.

Have a great day,

Rachel

Thought I would share these pictures of my workspace for anyone that is curious – and I wanted to take some pictures while it was clean!  I have and office/studio made out of a room in my apartment to create and ship orders.  Though if I’m working on bigger projects I manage to take over the living room as well so there are often paintings and painting supplies everywhere!  Jon is such a good sport.  : )

Happy Monday,

Here is an artist I’ve been admiring.  Stephanie lives in Munich, Germany and creates these lovely collage pieces.  I love her colors and simple line drawn interiors – they always make me want to enter the drawings, pull up and chair and have a cup of tea.  You can see more at her etsy shop or her website.

Cheers,

Rachel
